Our tenth anniversary is a chance to thank the people who have been alongside BEAM from the beginning. Vanessa and the team at Focus Force are part of that story.
Amy knew Vanessa before starting BEAM. When we needed our first London-based recruitment partner, she knew who she wanted to call. Here, Amy reflects with Vanessa on the work, trust and friendship they have shared.

THERE FROM THE START
Amy: You were the first person to recruit for BEAM. Very early on, we needed a London-based recruiter, and I wanted you on board.
I already knew how experienced you were and how many people you knew in the industry. What do you remember about our relationship over those years?
Vanessa: Focus Force has worked with BEAM since the company was formed, and I have known you for even longer.
Our relationship is grounded in professionalism, trust and honesty, with friendship as an added strength.
Firstly, many, many congratulations on reaching your tenth anniversary. All of us at Focus Force treasure the relationship we have with you and your team.
MORE THAN THE WORK
Amy: Thank you. We treasure it too. I really appreciate your support, your recruitment experience and our long chats.
You also welcome the team for coffee and a catch-up, which is something that stands out to me. What gives you the most pleasure in the work we do together?
Vanessa: It always gives us pleasure to know we have helped recruit suitable Participants who have contributed to a successful project.
Amy: That care matters to us. You, Alex, Carol and Andie bring a can-do attitude, straight-talking advice, regular updates and professionalism.
From your perspective, what helps us get a project off to a good start?
Vanessa: Clear details and expectations.
Screening questions should be well written and concise, while still covering everything needed to recruit the right Participants.
HONEST CONVERSATIONS
Amy: That’s where having experienced partners makes such a difference. You can give us honest advice about what recruitment involves.
You’re one of my go-to people when I have a difficult project and need assistance. What changes have made the work more challenging?
Vanessa: It has been an eventful ten years. We have been through economic highs and lows, as well as the difficulties of COVID and lockdowns.
In my experience, costs are being reduced while overheads continue to rise. Quotas are becoming more complex, and screeners are getting longer.
There is also the problem of dishonest applications. Sometimes you feel you need to be a detective.
Amy: You’ve alerted us to concerns about applications before, and that judgement is something we value. What would you tell someone starting in qualitative recruitment today?
Vanessa: Build relationships with people who want to be approached about research opportunities. Keep relevant records of previous participation.
Learn to recognise people who change their answers to fit what they think a project needs. Also, think carefully about advertising. It shouldn’t give applicants the answers to the screening questions.
TRUST THAT GOES BOTH WAYS
Amy: There’s a lot of thought behind recruiting the right people. It isn’t simply about filling places.
For me, being able to talk openly with you is a big part of our relationship. How would you describe BEAM in three words?
Vanessa: Professional, reliable, open-minded.
In the present environment, clear communication, honesty and a strong working relationship are more important than ever. I fully believe we have that with BEAM.
THANK YOU, FOCUS FORCE
Amy: Those words mean a great deal, especially coming from someone who has been with us from the start.
I want to thank you for your continued support, honesty and kindness. You’ve played a huge part in supporting BEAM and me personally.
One thing I’ve learned from working with you is that it will come together in the end. What are your thoughts as we look ahead?
Vanessa: Together with Alex, Carol and Andie, I look forward to seeing what the next few years will bring.
Amy: So do I. I hope we can continue to give you as much work as possible. Thank you to all of you for being part of our first ten years.
