Our first automotive project arrived in 2016, commissioned by Northstar (now HarrisX). Our most recent came from Field Sauce.
Between those two briefs sit 150 automotive research projects, more than 10,000 verified vehicle owners and work involving 20 car brands. There have also been several airports, closely guarded prototypes and an alarming amount of time spent studying strangers in car parks.
It has been quite a journey.

WHERE THE JOURNEY BEGAN
Back in 2016, BEAM was new. However, our curiosity, determination and appetite for a complicated brief were already fully operational.
That first AUTOMOTIVE commission with Northstar gave us an early opportunity to build our automotive knowledge. Since then, we have worked with MM-Eye, Verve, Escalent, Simpson Carpenter, GIM, Kadence, Europa Leader, HarrisX and many more.
Along the way, the projects have become bigger, bolder and more complex. Our expertise has grown with them. Today, most of our automotive work takes place across the UK. However, vehicles and drivers do not stop neatly at the border, so neither does our fieldwork.

150 PROJECTS LATER
Over ten years, we have delivered 150 automotive research projects across 20 car brands.
We have helped clients explore new makes and models. We have also supported improvements to existing vehicles and the wider driving experience.
Some projects have focused on design, pricing and purchase decisions. Others have explored technology, comfort, accessibility or the practical realities of fitting dogs, children, luggage and half of somebody’s house into a boot.
We have helped develop ergonomic in-car features for drivers with additional needs. We have also researched better boot ramps for dog-owning drivers. Both demonstrate why good automotive research matters. Vehicles must work for real people, in real life, not just look appealing beneath showroom lighting.
Our published case study, Automotive at Scale with Speed & Control, shows how far that capability has developed. For a first-of-its-kind UK car clinic, we recruited 275 high-net-worth SUV owners. Of those, 255 attended, exceeding the required 250 completes.
That result came from careful quota management, robust verification and three tightly controlled recruitment weeks, not from crossing our fingers near a luxury dealership.
KNOWING THE MARKET
Automotive recruitment is not simply about finding someone who owns a car.
To do it properly, you need to understand brands, makes, models, specifications and powertrains. You also need to know the difference between what somebody owns, what they claim to own and what their suspiciously cropped photograph is trying very hard not to reveal.
However, technical knowledge is only part of the job.
The news, the economy, global conflict and future thinking all shape how drivers feel. Fuel costs affect decisions. New technology changes expectations. Economic uncertainty influences purchasing plans. Meanwhile, electric vehicles, connected features and flexible ownership models continue to shift the market.
We explored several of these changes in Consumer Trends: Automotive 2025, including sustainability, connectivity, financial flexibility and personalisation.
For us, staying informed is not an optional extra. It helps us understand the people behind the quotas and challenge assumptions before they become expensive problems.
HONEST FROM THE START
Experience has also made us more confident about saying what is achievable and what is not.
We would rather have an honest conversation at the first quote than make an unrealistic promise and introduce risk later. That means assessing incidence, ownership criteria, geography, timelines and verification requirements before recruitment begins.
Good feasibility protects the research. It also protects budgets, delivery schedules and participant experience. Sometimes the right answer is yes. Sometimes it is yes, but differently. Occasionally, it is no, unless someone invents another three weeks.
FINDING THE RIGHT DRIVERS
Automotive recruitment requires curiosity and constant observation.
We listen to conversations. We notice where people walk in car parks. We spend time in places where owners of target brands are likely to be. We keep our eyes and ears open because genuine behaviour often tells us more than a database ever could.
However, finding somebody is only the beginning.
Over the past decade, we have checked and verified more than 10,000 vehicle owners. That has meant reviewing ownership evidence, specifications, registration details, identities and eligibility. Our article, Verification and Validation: Protecting the Integrity of Research, explains why these checks matter. Duplicate applications, AI-generated responses, suspicious documents and false ownership claims can all damage data quality.
Therefore, automated checks are useful, but experienced human judgement remains essential. Some documents are convincing. Others appear to have been created during a hurried lunch break using Microsoft Paint.
CROSSING BORDERS
Our international automotive work has taken vehicle owners and fleet managers to Germany for confidential reviews of vehicles that had not yet reached the market.
This kind of research demands more than recruitment. It involves travel planning, participant care, confidentiality, venue coordination, contingency planning and constant communication.
In Automotive Insight in Germany, we worked with a German delivery partner to recruit verified participants for electric vehicle launch research in Frankfurt. The programme included specialist moderation, translation, secure vehicle handling and live streaming, all delivered within five weeks.
Meanwhile, Keeping Automotive Fieldwork on Track shares another example involving UK company-car owners, fleet managers and key account managers travelling to Hamburg.
The locations may change. However, the essentials remain the same: recruit the right people, prepare them properly and keep every moving part under control.

THE PEOPLE POWERING IT
Of course, none of this happens without people who genuinely know their stuff.
Alicia, affectionately known as The BEAM Stig, leads our automotive project management. She combines technical understanding with the ability to keep complex studies moving.
Pat provides the ‘boots-on-the-ground man-power’ hosting event days as Alicia’s trusty sidekick.
Meanwhile, Kay provides the horsepower behind quota tracking and recruitment accuracy. She spots gaps, challenges inconsistencies and helps ensure every participant is where they should be.
Together with our wider team and delivery partners, they turn ambitious briefs into carefully managed fieldwork.

THE ROAD AHEAD
From our first commission with Northstar to our latest with Field Sauce, our automotive journey reflects BEAM’s wider growth.
We have developed deeper knowledge, stronger verification processes and greater international capability. However, we have kept the qualities that got us started: curiosity, honesty, collaboration and a willingness to look closely at the details.
Ten years. 150 projects. More than 10,000 verified owners. Twenty car brands. We are proud of the road travelled so far. We are also very ready for what comes next.
